July 30, 2013, Cranbury, NJ. – Iris ID Systems Inc., formerly a division of LG Electronics, announced today that Winthrop University based in Rock Hill, South Carolina is rolling out Iris ID iCAM 7000 series to enroll incoming students from the fall semester 2013. The 6,170 student university will begin using the iris recognition technology provided by Iris ID Systems Inc. at the Macfeat Early Childhood Laboratory School, an on-campus kindergarten and pre-school program where education majors are trained and conduct research.

Winthrop University plans to utilize the Iris ID technology in many other areas of the university including the Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education and Wellness Center, the campus data center, front doors of residence halls, highly sensitive areas in the Chemistry Department, dining facilities, tutoring centers, and the library.

James Hammond, Vice President for Information Technology at Winthrop University said, “While assessing security at the laboratory school, we realized that the kids were always supervised by adult teachers. But what happens when an adult, some unauthorized, comes to pick one of them up? The teacher has to leave the children unattended to answer the door. We dismissed the idea of card ID only solutions because they are not very secure and we had concerns that a parent or guardian would lose their ID card or forget to carry it with them. Also, an ID card can get lost or might be stolen, and if a loss or theft hasn’t been reported, the card will still work.”

Mohammed Murad, Vice President of Iris ID Systems Inc. said, “We are very proud and excited to be part of the implementation of iris technology at Winthrop University. This is a strategic implementation for Iris ID in the education market. After the recent events at school campuses, iris recognition systems provide a perfect solution for adding an effective layer of security at
school campuses.”
